Introducing the Congress of Democratic and Federalist Republicans

The Congress of Democratic & Federalist Republicans is a collection of political and civil parties, groups, and activists that emerged from the experience of struggle in forming the broadest Republican coalition in the fight against the Islamic Republic regime.
This struggle has made possible the proximity and united action of two Republican factions: the Democratic-Republicans (opponents of federalism) and the Federal Democrats (supporters of federalism).
This very valuable theoretical experience or democratic model for the unity of action among Republicans, arising from the long years of dialogue and bargaining by supporters of these two intellectual tendencies or two political wings within the Republican movement.

Previously, the Republican parties and political organizations had serious differences of opinion on two issues in establishing a political coalition, and because of this difference of opinion, the Republicans were unable to gather under one political umbrella. As everyone knows, one faction of Republicans is against federalism and the other faction is in favor of federalism for the political system after the change of regime in Iran. The basic condition of the first faction (opponents of federalism) for creating a political coalition was to eliminate the concept of federalism from the coalition agreement, and the basic condition of the second faction (pro-federalism) was to include federalism in the political coalition agreement. For this reason, these two factions or two republican intellectual tendencies have always continued their political struggle far from each other, and precisely because of this dispersion, it has not been possible for them to create a republican political alternative. With a cursory glance at the existing political coalitions, one can also see political coalitions with the above theme in the opposition arena.

The Congress, based on a critical analysis of the above experience over many years and by changing the way of looking at the issue, took a very effective step by relying on the democratic method of “recognizing intellectual tendencies and political factions” instead of negating or eliminating them. In the Congress Memorandum, the intellectual tendencies and political factions of the Republicans, whether they are in favor of or against federalism, are neither eliminated nor even negated. Rather, the Congress, by recognizing the different intellectual tendencies in the republican movement, leaves the arbitration of choosing or not choosing a federal system in Iran to the future Constituent Assembly. After all, only the elected Constituent Assembly has the right to arbitrate, not this party or that political organization. And it was precisely this democratic method of establishing a political coalition that led to the birth of the Congress.

The basis for cooperation between parties, organizations, and political and civil activists is an 8-article memorandum of understanding. The 8-Article Memorandum not only led to the formation of the Congress, but this Congress has also paved the way for understanding, solidarity, and the emergence of all Republicans of all ideological orientations under the umbrella of the “Republican Strategic Council.”

The Congress has made possible and enabled a space for convergence, solidarity, and unification of political action at every level, from the center to the periphery, from opponents of federalism to its supporters, and so on.
